Rebecca Hawkins’ drawings celebrate the strength and elegance of the ladies of Rajasthan and Nepal.
Having spent many months living in India and Nepal, Rebecca found herself drawn to such awe-inspiring figures who embodied their culture and traditions in the face of such material and social adversity. Rather than seeking to offer a social commentary, these beautifully fluid drawings are inspired by the inherent spirit and beguiling majesty of her subjects.
Working from her mind’s eye Rebecca’s drawings are snapshots of memory. Using charcoal to focus on the tone and form of the imagery, it is through the process of their creation that each individual spirit and character evolves and Rebecca’s ethereal subjects emerge.
Recently Rebecca has started working with gold-leaf, drawing the charcoal onto the gold, combined with beautifully rendered wood-blocked printing alongside.
